“I was drawn to the tenets of naturopathic medicine because they challenge us to treat each patient as a unique individual, to emphasize prevention, and to address the underlying causes of disease.”
Dr. Dara Thompson practices naturopathic medicine in Mill Valley, California. Dr. Thompson is adept at treating a wide variety of medical conditions and at uncovering the root cause of illness. She has advanced training in diet and nutrition, the treatment of environmental illness and supportive care for cancer patients. As an undergraduate she majored in biology at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Santa Cruz. These studies provided her with a broad foundation in the biological and physical sciences. Her approach to medicine demonstrates a detailed understanding of the scientific process and the fundamentals of research. She believes there are always options and answers–they simply need to be discovered.
Dr. Thompson completed her doctorate at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland Oregon, the oldest naturopathic medical college in the U.S.(to learn more about naturopathic medical education visit http://www.aanmc.org/ ). At NCNM Dr. Thompson became dedicated to the philosophy of naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic medicine requires doctors to treat the whole person, working with each individual’s challenges and strengths. In naturopathic medicine there are no right or wrong methods of treatment; the goal is to bring the body back into balance. It is this respect for the wisdom of the human body, rather than a battle against it, that sets naturopathy apart from many branches of medicine.
In 2007 Dr. Thompson completed a one-year post-graduate training in environmental medicine, the treatment of illnesses caused by environmental toxins. Dr. Thompson has incorporated this knowledge into her medical practice. She educates all of her patients on the avoidance of environmental toxins and uses various protocols to eliminate harmful chemicals and heavy metals from the body. Many modern diseases such as cancer, infertility, neurological disorders and allergies have environmental causes. By removing these harmful substances from the body, we remove the obstacles to cure and pave the way to recovery.
Dr. Thompson is committed to the naturopathic doctrine of Doctor as Teacher. She believes in educating her patients about their bodies and risks and benefits of any treatment. She gives regular community lectures to educate the public on a variety of common health complaints and natural therapies. For the past eight years she has been teaching Anatomy and Physiology and Clinical Nutrition to master’s students in Chinese Medicine. The most consistent feedback that she received as an educator is that she has the ability to explain complex scientific or medical concepts in a way that is concise and easy to understand.
More than a decade of clinical experience has taught Dr. Thompson the power of being a good diagnostician. All too often, in today’s medical system, symptoms are addressed rather than the underlying causes of disease. Most people’s primary complaint is a symptom–pain, fatigue, anxiety, high blood pressure, infertility, cancer. However, if we treat those complaints without asking why they are there, the disease often remains unchanged. If, on the other hand, we find the right diagnosis and directly treat the cause, we have the opportunity to find a lasting cure.
